Going back in time, you will find a completely different life than the one we have now. One of the biggest differences between our time and historic times, is in the kitchen. Today we have so many electrical appliances that will automate our dirty work, it’s not even funny anymore. But a century ago, appliances weren’t commonplace. The first dishwasher was built around the 1850s.

The invention of the dishwasher has come from a woman named Josephine Cochran. She was a very wealthy society matron from Illinois. Next to that, she was also an inventor. Ms. Cochran has hosted many dinner parties to show off her first few models. The first ones were hand operated. Her staff had a much easier time washing the dishes thanks to these machines.

Ms. Cochran clearly had the engineering mindset. Before building one of her first dishwashers, she measures the cups and the the plates and designed compartments that were to exactly large enough to store them. Then the compartments themselves fitted into a wheel that was positioned inside a copper boiler.

By turning the wheel, hot and soapy water would squirt up and then it filtered through the dirty dishes, making them clean. For this genius idea, she won a lot of favor with the local restaurants and hotels. She patented her design and started producing dishwashers commercially. She quickly expanded her wealth.

A long time later, when the 1920s hit, plumbing became more and more commonplace. Dishwashers were hooked up to the plumbing and it became easier to supply them with water. A few decades later, drying elements were added to dishwashers as well. They’ve gotten better ever since and in the 1970s they became commonplace.

Then there is the refrigerator. This marvelous invention was conceived by Carl von Linde. He was a German engineer who invented the technology to keep things cool, a feature that is the core of all refrigerators. Carl received a patent for his refrigerator idea in 1877. When the 1920s hit, hundreds of companies were manufacturing fridges.

It took some time before the fridge managed to get a foothold in people’s kitchens. In the late 1930s, only a small fraction of the US population had purchased a fridge. By the time the 1950s, a vast majority of homes were the proud owners of a fridge. Nowadays, ofcourse, nearly everybody owns one.

Nowadays, people have gotten used to all sorts of kitchen appliances. We completely take them for granted. We have microwaves, toaster ovens, American fridge freezers and whatnot. But every once in a while, I like to stand still and think. Whenever I do this, it suddenly becomes much more easy for me to be thankful!

When moving into a new home, or perhaps when moving out of your parental home for the first time, you are going to find out that it can actually be quite hard to decorate a kitchen. It’s not something you do every day. Every time you do it, you will have to inform yourself about what’s available on the market today.

You must always be sure to think really hard about what you are going to need before you make a purchase. Buying large kitchen appliances has a habit of making you a lot lighter, money wise. The more expensive an appliance is, the longer it should last you.

Ever since you last purchased appliances for your kitchen, a lot has changed. Most people only reorganize their kitchen every decade or so, so a lot of time passes between buying new appliances. So how will you know what to get in these modern times? A quick overview.

1. Electric stoves. You are going to need a stove if you plan on being able to cook food. Electric stoves are all the rage because they are so easy to use. For more control over the temperature at which you cook your food, go with a gas stove.

2. Fridges. In modern times, American fridge freezers are all the rage. These machines are basically a refrigerator and a freezer integrated into one. They are very spacey and will allow you to store a lot of food. The cheapest ones are only a few hundred bucks.

3. The small appliances. Most people like to drink either coffee or tea. So you will likely need a coffee grinder, miller and maker if you like coffee, or a water heater if you like tea. Or maybe you like to drink a few shots of espresso every day.

4. Luxurious appliances. Food processors, citrus juicers, pasta makers, sausage stuffers, ice cream makers. Perhaps you like to bake waffles, or toast bread. There are appliances to help you do all of this.

If you feel overwhelmed by this modest list, you are going to feel like you are drowning when you actually visit an electronics store to buy appliances. My advice is to stay cool and come up with a list of your most essential requirements, prior to visiting the store. Get the most important stuff first. The rest can wait.
