Gourmet Macaroni & Cheese – Italian Style – Savour the World’s Best Comfort Food

Wednesday 13 January 2010 @ 8:14 am

Start the New Year with a resolution to eat more exciting gluten-free foods. There are some outrageously delicious gourmet foods that are gluten free, so expand your thinking in 2010, and spice up your kitchen pantry!

Either flavored or unflavored, coffee has a variety of benefits, one of which is waking you up in the morning. Like tea, it is also associated with therapeutic effects that are good for your system. Given this coffee is deemed as essential for some and they can hardly imagine their life without it. Since coffee is a mainstay for society, manufacturers are going wild with their flavoring offerings.

Scones. No traditional dish has had to suffer more abuse than the English scone. The rumor that Queen Victoria used to throw scones at her servants when she was unamused with their behavior is entirely false. Historians are now of the opinion that she only ever threw them at politicians and children under the age of four who refused to be seen and not heard. Bangers and mash. Yet another example of the great culinary invention at its best. Chef Blacktooth from Reading confided in me that the secret of the preperation of this dish is in the angle of the sausages which must form an inverted V in memory of Winston Churchill who commissioned this dish for a victory election celebration in 1945. Though Churchill lost the election, England gained a precious addition to its menu.

There are many excellent rice pastas available. I am partial to the vermicelli since you can’t detect that texture that often comes with the rice pastas. If you add the right sauce however, it doesn’t matter as much which pasta you use. Try a great pesto, or traditional marinara. Mom’s Garlic & Basil Spaghetti Sauce from Fischer & Wieser in Texas, is a delightful Marinara sauce. If you like a pesto sauce with a twist, try the Chardonnay Artichoke Pesto sauce from Gil’s Gourmet of Sand City CA. There are many sauces with simple ingredients that should be safe for most people with gluten intolerance. If you are extremely sensitive, you might want to stay with the products that are guaranteed to be gluten-free. I like to concoct my own sauces. Try lightly stir-frying your favorite vegetables and adding a fantastic tapenade. One of my favorite combos is zucchini, tomatoes, garlic and an olive tapenade.

So, let us segue to tapenades. There are the traditional tapenades made with olives, capers, garlic, and sometimes anchovies. The Los Olivos Cafe from the town of that name in CA, made famous by the movie Sideways, makes a divine tapenade in this style. It is out of this world when spread on bread or crackers. Adding a spoonful of this rich mixture can make any ordinary dish extraordinary. The term tapenade has expanded to cover many other spreads, made with olive oil, herbs and an array of vegetables such as artichokes, red peppers, carrots, eggplant, and so on. Hand to Mouth Edibles is a company in Los Angeles who makes a terrific line of tapenades. Try their Artichoke Ambrosia on a cracker!

The final secret to that perfect cup of gourmet flavored coffee is choosing the right water. In this case, water is not water! Believe it or not, the type of water that you choose will indeed affect the taste of the coffee. Try going for water that is not chlorinated and has no purifying chemicals. Many claim that the best cup of gourmet flavored cofeee is one made from bottled water while others use only natural spring water. Once you decide which combination yields the best taste for you, I know that you’ll be hooked on gourmet flavored coffee!

The Most Amazing New Ice Cream Flavors

Monday 26 October 2009 @ 5:36 am

Ice cream is one of those things that people will never stop loving. Or I’ll never stop loving it at least. I’ve been eating it my whole life, and my love for it hasn’t faded one bit since my childhood. It’s truly my junk food of choice when it comes down to it.

I’m also a big fan of many of the newer flavors that have recently come to market. Leading the way is Haagen Dazs, as they’ve come out with a ton of seriously delicious ice cream flavors during the last year.

Anyway, here are some new ice cream flavors that I’ve tried over the course of the last year and I’ve really enjoyed them. If you’re an ice cream lover like I am and want to expand your palette, try these out as I’m sure you’ll find them to be pretty interesting.

The first one, and my favorite new one, is a brown sugar ice cream made by Haagen Dazs. This is an awesome flavor and it tastes so much like actual brown sugar that it’s scary.

Another really interesting type of ice cream was the fleur de caramel. I don’t kid when I say that it’s one of the most unique types of ice cream I’ve ever tried, as the blend of the sweet caramel mixed with salt results in a really unique flavor.

This makes it really interesting, as the salty and sweet mix really hits the spot. I think you’ll find this one to be very different from other ice creams that you typically try.

Another amazing ice cream flavor is the sticky toffee pudding at Haagen Dazs. It’s simply divine in my book and also tastes very much like real toffee.

Then there’s one more, and this is made by Baskin Robbins. The name of the flavor is Oreo Outrageous, and it’s just that. Lots of oreos, and it’s absolutely outrageous.

About Nicholas McMillan: While he’s definitely an ice cream lover, he also writes regularly about the Little Tikes Country Kitchen set, and the Little Tikes Prep ‘n Serve Kitchen.

Christmas and Holiday Gift Giving Ideas for Family and Friends

Friday 14 November 2008 @ 9:26 pm

I’ve must say I love the Holidays. The warm feeling of love that surrounds us. The wonderful aroma of holiday food. The bright colors and decorations.

I love to give and receive gifts. Do you ever wonder how the gift giving tradition started. There are many theories. Here are three.

At some time in our ancient past, friends exchanged evergreen twigs and dried fruits as wishes for continuation and abundance of life in the coming year. Romans exchanged gifts at winter solstice as expressions of brotherhood and affection, giving coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one’s journey through life.

Santa Claus, evolved from St. Nicholas, an actual person who distributed his wealth to the needy through the giving of secret gifts. During the fourth century St. Nicholas had a reputation for his generosity and kindness, especially toward children. He was known for giving treats and small presents to them. St. Nicholas has evolved into the Santa Claus of today.

In our Christian culture, the giving of gifts at Christmas is said to symbolize the gifts the Wise Men brought to the baby Jesus. The wise men brought three gifts with them to honor Jesus, which had prophetic meaning. Gold- a gift for a king, Incense- a gift for a priest and Myrrh- a burial ointment for one who would die

Whether you are giving a gift to a special loved one or an friend from work, you want the person to know you appreciate them. Finding the right gift can be difficult and time comsuming. I am inserting a link to help you with your holiday shopping. Click here for Special Gift Ideas.
